Montfort-sur-Argens is a Templar village perched on a Mont Fort on the edge of the Argens plain. Its old town with its narrow streets and arched passages has some lovely surprises in store for you. You will be able to discover, among other things, a portcullis door from the 13th century, the clock tower and its campanile, if you look carefully you will also be able to see traces of the passage of Compagnons on the Commune. At the end of your walk you will arrive in front of the 13th century Templar castle which dominates the village. But the visit is not over, there are still many things to discover…
Montfort takes its name from the Latin Mons Fortis (fortified hill), the ancient city of the counts of Provence, from the 12th century.
Old village of the middle Var, admirably exposed in a setting of old Provence still intact, Montfort-sur-Argens is located 10 km north of Brignoles, between the Gorges du Verdon and the coast.
Characterized by a vast plain with deep soil, oriented east-west and watered by the Argens, it is located in the most extensive depression formed by this river in the interior.
A stony valley joins the territory of Cotignac to the northeast, while a massif forming a plateau and cut by rugged ravines occupies the northwest part.
The very healthy climate is particularly recommended for children and all those who need fresh air, rest and relaxation. Montfort-sur-Argens benefits from a microclimate with maximum sunshine.
Main historical facts:
1793, the castle was transformed into a revolutionary prison, and thus escaped destruction;
1814, birth of Joseph Louis Lambot, inventor of reinforced cement (universal exhibition in Paris 1855);
1987, Montfort finally has enough water! It took 1,000 years of perseverance, since the installation of the first fountain in the castle, to get to this point.
Saints linked to the commune:
Saint Blaise, patron saint of Montfort-sur-Argens;
Saint Isidore, patron saint of plowmen;
Saint Jean Baptist* ;
Saint Clair*.
*The latter two had their oratory in Montfort.
